A tribute to Meruschka Govender
Before we dive into any of the myriad of stories for this blog, we want to take a moment, a gentle pause, to pay homage to two beings who've inspired this endeavour. Because this is likely the best background we can give you on us. Without these details, you won't really understand us completely, and we feel quite profoundly about how this was kind of written in the stars.
Hello there, I'm Dee, the founder of HolidayDOG! As we embark on this journey together, I want to take a moment to share a deeply personal story that inspired the creation of this platform.
This post is a heartfelt dedication to my two Merus: a four-legged companion who brings immeasurable joy to my life and her late namesake, a remarkable woman whose spirit lingers in every keystroke as I pen down these words: Meruschka Govender.
Meruschka Govender, widely known as MzansiGirl, transcended the realm of a travel blogger, embodying a spirit that colored life with vibrant adventures. Before she lost her battle with cancer in 2019, she traversed the corners of South Africa and the world. Meruschka's infectious laughter still echoes through the skies during hot-air balloon rides over the Magaliesberg and on rafts navigating the Orange River.
Meruschka was my wingwoman, my confidante, and travel partner. Her impact on the travel community was immeasurable. She inspired a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world and played a pivotal role in tourism campaigns, including the influential #MeetSouthAfrica.
But beyond her accomplishments, Meruschka loved dogs. Imagining her alive today, I can't help but envision a yard filled with the joyous chaos of at least five dogs, possibly all rescued. When my Malinois entered the world on 27 September 2022, World Tourism Day, it felt like a serendipitous connection, a nod from her vibrant spirit.
I named my dog Meru, underscoring the beautiful coincidence of celebrating tourism—a cause Meruschka passionately championed. Her memory remains a guiding light, prompting us to keep exploring, keep jumping, and cherish every moment.
Through this tribute, her enduring presence continues to thrive in my new best friend, my loyal canine companion. HolidayDOG celebrates the profound impact traveling can have on the world and your heart.
Thank you for joining me on this journey!
Love, Dee
